This one-hour continuing education course prepares doctors of chiropractic to manage acute and chronic pain within their scope of practice and to care safely for patients who take, or are offered, opioids. It covers all three topics named in Kansas's Category III continuing education standard: acute and chronic pain management, the appropriate prescribing of opioids, and the use of prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs). National guidelines, including the CDC Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain (2022) and the American College of Physicians low back pain guideline (2017), are the baseline throughout, and Kansas serves as the state-level example.
Five fictional Case Files, set in chiropractic practices, apply each topic, and a From the Doc's Desk case study follows one patient with chronic low back pain on long-term opioids through assessment, co-management with her prescriber, and a safety event. The course is explicit that chiropractors do not prescribe opioids; its opioid and PDMP content addresses guideline literacy, recognition of risk, communication with prescribers, and emergency response.
