Substance-related situations are among the most uncomfortable and legally sensitive moments a healthcare provider can face. This course gives clinicians a practical, judgment-free framework for recognizing signs of possible impairment, understanding how alcohol, opioids, stimulants, cannabis, and sedatives affect treatment safety, and knowing when to proceed, modify, postpone, or decline care.
Participants will learn how to conduct respectful, effective intake screening; use calm, non-confrontational language when addressing concerns with patients; and document observations in a way that is factual, defensible, and free of diagnostic overreach. The course also covers the provider's own vulnerability to burnout-related substance misuse, offering guidance on recognizing warning signs in themselves and colleagues and seeking help early.
Legal and ethical responsibilities are addressed in depth, including informed consent, confidentiality, mandatory reporting triggers, and the elements of a defensible practice policy. A series of realistic case studies lets learners apply these principles to ambiguous, real-world scenarios before encountering them in practice.
By course completion, participants will be able to build consistent, professional responses to substance-related concerns that protect their patients, their practice, and their license.
